Human Pathogens
Bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella that live on skin or in soil can contaminate produce and cause foodborne illness.

Professional Hygiene & Biosecurity
Laboratory-standard protocols for safe harvesting in NFT systems. Learn the microbiology, follow the SOP, and protect every plant.
The Science
In a Food Ladder greenhouse, we aren't just gardening; we are managing a high-performance biological system. While a traditional soil garden is a "buffet" for both good and bad microbes, our NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system is a controlled environment.
The Risk of the Loop: Because our system recirculates water, it is incredibly water-efficient. However, this means if a pathogen (a "bad" germ) enters the water reservoir via a dirty hand or tool, it can be delivered to every single plant in the system within minutes. We practise biosecurity to keep our "Loop" sterile and our harvest safe to eat.
Bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella that live on skin or in soil can contaminate produce and cause foodborne illness.
Water-moulds like Pythium (root rot) can "crash" an entire greenhouse if introduced from outside dirt. Zoospores spread rapidly through the recirculating water.
Standard Operating Procedure
Follow these steps every time you enter the "Zone" to harvest.
Food Ladder Advantage
Our greenhouses are designed with dedicated sanitisation stations, ensuring you never bring "outside world" contaminants into the grow zone.
Food Ladder Advantage
In a Food Ladder NFT system, our UV-stabilised channels prevent the bacterial buildup often found in porous garden timber.
Junior Grower Activity
The Metaphor: Tell your students the greenhouse is a "Space Station." Outside germs are "Space Dust" that can break the machines. We wash our hands to "Scrub In" like surgeons to protect our plant patients!
Try this: Use glitter on one student's hand to show how "Invisible Germs" spread to tools and leaves with just one touch!
Diagnostic Guide
If hygiene fails, the system will tell you. Look for these "Red Alerts":
Scientific Cause: Pythium outbreak—likely introduced from dirty shoes or outside tools.
The Fix: Lower water temp to 18°C and treat with a food-safe oxidiser (H₂O₂).
Scientific Cause: Botrytis—caused by high humidity and handling plants with wet, dirty hands.
The Fix: Improve airflow and remove infected leaves immediately using sterilised snips.
Scientific Cause: Anaerobic bacteria—buildup of organic "trash" (dead leaves) in the gullies.
The Fix: Clear all debris. In a Food Ladder system, our high-flow gullies make this easy to spot and clean.
Social Enterprise
Maintaining a high standard of hygiene isn't just about science—it's about Business. If you are running a Social Enterprise and selling your produce to the local community, your reputation relies on "Food Safety."
Keep a log of who harvested which bench and when. Professional-grade hygiene builds trust.
Only professional-grade hygiene allows you to label your produce as "Premium Greenhouse Grown."
Because we don't use pesticides in our controlled environment, our "hygiene" is our only defence. It's the cleanest way to grow food on the planet.
Food Ladder Advantage
The sterile, controlled environment of a Food Ladder NFT system contrasts with the unpredictable, "messy" nature of traditional soil gardening—giving your Social Enterprise a clear quality story.
Junior Grower Activity
Tell the younger kids we are "scrubbing in" like surgeons to protect our plant patients! Make it fun—they're not just washing hands, they're becoming "Lab Assistants."
